Host: It's 100.3, the River. It's Eric West and I'm in Tuesday night here it is, Great way to start off 2016, Mark Patrick, the hypnotist is coming to town and Mark joins us right now on the phone. Welcome in Mark.
Mark: Hey, thanks for having me on.
Host: Oh, sure thing. And I tell you’ve got two great sessions that are going to take place on Tuesday night, the Holiday Inn Research Park Hotel in Huntsville. Two of the biggest things people struggle with I bet, losing weight and stopping smoking.
Mark: Yeah, the number one and two resolution every year are the to be able to lose weight and stop smoking. So, we’re definitely going to help with that.
Host: And I attended one of these a couple of years ago and it was pretty fascinating to me. Just the combination of everything that you guys do, not just the hypnotist part, but the education and things like that. I though it was fantastic. Tell people a little bit about what they’re going to experience on Tuesday night.
Mark: Well, first of all I think everybody’s perception of hypnosis –the minute you hear hypnosis everybody thinks of barking and clucking and doing crazy silly things. So, part of the process is really just getting people to understand how their brain works. We actually go –let me tell you about this.
We go into hypnosis every day of our life. We don’t call it hypnosis, but when you’re driving your car for a long distance and you zone out you go into an alpha state of brain activity. Without getting very technical, that’s a hypnotic state. Before you fall asleep you’re in a state of hypnosis, when you wake up in the morning you’re in that state and that’s when part of your day where your mind is the most open to suggestion.
So, all we do is we put people back into those states so they can start communicating to the most powerful muscle in their body which is their brain. So, they could start accomplishing and getting control over the habits that they want to get control over in the first place. It’s really that simple.
Host: You know, we all have that experience where we’re not falling asleep while driving, but we might be driving down the highway or something and then all of a sudden realize, “Wait, I don’t even really remember what happened in the last three, four, five minutes. Was I actually paying attention?”
Mark: Well, that’s your daydream state. You know, a lot of people don’t realize that when they get into their car, the minute they turn on the ignition they’re not even focused on the road, next thing you know, they’re home in their driveway and they’re like, “How did I get home?” Your brain starts to drive on auto-pilot. And that’s kind of what we’re going to do with hypnosis for the weight loss and for the stop smoking.
And let’s just talk about weight for a second. Here is what happens. Every body goes on a diet, 95% of the people who go on a diet gain the weight back. What happens is this. We have an internal image of our self that’s been shaped as we’ve grown up and we reinforce it with our self-talk. People don’t realize it, our self-talk is a form of hypnosis.
So, here’s what happens. We start having an image of our self and we start reinforcing it by saying things like this, “I’m overweight. I hate exercise. I’m such a couch potato. I’m not motivated.” Now, we go on a diet and start making changes. They’re all good changes and they’re all healthy changes, but those changes go against our own programming and image of our self. The next thing you know, we slam on the breaks, subconsciously we gain all the weight back. So, under hypnosis one of the things we really do is we focus on a person’s images subconsciously so that they feel good about themselves, they let go of all the negativity towards the weight in the past and they start attracting the habits in the first place that they want to do. And those habits, they don’t have to think about them, and end up doing them almost automatically.
And that sounds crazy, but when was the last time a person went to a grocery store, and you talk about cravings for food and the crave the list of foods that they didn’t want? We always create the list of foods we want. So, if you think about it in that way how simple it is that’s the way hypnosis works that works at the subconscious level.
Host: Wow. Is it kind of like you know, you hear people talk about athletes and muscle memory how they train their bodies to do certain things and to the point where they just aren’t thinking about it. Is it kind of almost muscle memory for your brain where you’re creating those habits?
Mark: Exactly. Your subconscious responds to images and emotions, not logic. Your conscious responds to logic. Logically everybody knows we should be doing certain things, but when it’s programmed in your subconscious it is like a sponge, it absorbs all information, both good and bad. So, if you tell a lot of good information eventually that stuff tends to stick and replace the old negative information.
