Host: 97.7 KCRR Classic Rock from Thin Lizzy, the boys are back in town and the boy is back in town. On the phone with us the hypnotist himself, Mark Patrick, how are you sir?

Mark: Thanks for having me on.

Host: Hey, not a problem at all. And ugh where are you right? I know you do a lot of traveling, where are you right now?

Mark: I am in New Jersey

Host: You’re in New Jersey, that’s a good place to be, right, right?

Mark: Absolutely

Host: Good enough. Now, you are a hypnotist and what you do is you help people lose weight and quit smoking under hypnosis, and that is what you are going to do when you come to Waterloo, Five Sullivan Bros. Convention Center downtown Waterloo it is going to be October 16, 5:30-7:30 will be the weight loss clinic and then from 8-10 will be the stop smoking clinic, and how do you make that happen? How do you make somebody not have to use willpower through hypnosis to do what they want to do?

Mark: Well here is the thing with will power and this is the biggest misconception is that you need willpower to change habits. Will power is the conscious behavior when you change a habit and that is what we do during hypnosis. A habit is a thousand times more powerful than any type of willpower so it’s all about changing your habits, whether they are stop smoking behaviors or weight loss behaviors.

When you go to bed at night, before you are fully asleep, you enter into a state of consciousness, known as an alpha state. You wake up in that state in the morning. So if you want to know how it feels, it is a very light state of awareness so that is what we are going to put everybody into during the hypnosis session.

Host: Alright, and during that time under hypnosis, you give them clues or keys to help them deal with what they are dealing with, correct.

Mark: Well here is how smoking working. Every smokers will you tell you this – they love to smoke even if they know it is killing them. If you are listening right now and you are a smoker, you are conditioned or hypnotized through a series of events in your life that made you smoke. Think about when you were a child and you played with candy cigarettes. You smoked them, you ate them, you had a first experience with pleasure towards smoking long before you ever lit up your first cigarette, so what we are going to do during a hypnosis session is this: we are going to put all of the smokers back into the scenes in which you smoke right now: cup of coffee in the morning, break at work, driving and smoking, stress, and we are going to break those mental connections, and then put you back into those scenes as a healthy non-smoker.

We are going to associated all the things in your life, real things that give you pleasure towards becoming and remaining a non-smoker. Now, when you get out of hypnosis, here is what happens: that pleasure association is gone, those connections are gone, and you are able to be around other smokers and not want to smoke, and be in full control.
